So I thought I would take a slightly different direction with this new blog.
This site has been very World of Warcraft focused since its conception and yet the idea is to be an MMO Community and not just WoW. We have dabbled in other games like Aion and we have had a really good relationship with NCSoft. What I would like to do however is expand the community in a more effective way towards other games, especially newer ones.
I think this breaks it down therefore into two major up and coming releases. The first being SW:TOR (Star Wars: The Old Republic) and the second being Final Fantasy XIV. Now honestly I'm not one of those people that has played all the Final Fantasy titles. I'm not an avid follower of those games although I'm sure there are many Ensidia members and I'm guessing Community members of this site that are totally hyped for that game. I however will most likely be more focused on the first of the two previously mentioned titles.
Now initially I had caught a couple of the cinematic movies, read a few minor things and not much else about TOR. I'm not a huge Star Wars maniac or anything but I have of course watched the movies several times and played a few of the games. I don't know the names of all the planets and characters and such though like many people out there. That however does not detract from the lure this game offers.
For those of you totally unfamiliar, TOR is not trying to directly go up against WoW the normal way and make the same thing but better (as most new MMO's have tried to do), but instead they are taking things in a very different direction. The first of these ways and for me probably the most dubious way is with Story. They want to keep all the core components of the modern MMO but add in an epic story that you have control over and influence on as you develop your character. I can see this as being pretty damn cool with playing alone or with less than 5 other people. I am really not quite sure how this will work in a raid environment though and only time will tell how well this will be developed.
The next major change with this game and I would say the core thought behind this blog is the Trinity System. For those of you who have never heard of this it refers to the three core roles that breakdown the majority of MMO's: Tank, Healer, Damage. SW:TOR seeks to abolish this system by providing only two core roles. This means that you have pure damage or group support. Group support means everything from crowd control, to debuffing. It however does not include healing, there is no healing class in this game and there will only be some minor "emergency" heals available. By this point you are probably sitting there thinking how on earth can you play an MMO without the Trinity. I have to admit that was my first reaction also. If they manage to make it work though it could be a very interesting breakthrough in MMO design.
Think of it like this, when you play World of Warcraft your roles are extremely static. During raids you most likely have a specific task where you spam heal the raid, tank a boss and do a rotation, DPS a mob and do a rotation. The idea is for the role of players to open up a lot more where you actually use your CC, have a wide variety of skills and your role is able to adapt to the situation you are in. Now as I said before this is all going to depend on how well it's implemented and how well everything is balanced etc. It's a very tough job that Bioware have given themselves, but given their history of great games I would say that they have one of the better shots of pulling it off.
There is a lot more I could say on this game but since we have some content relating to this game incoming I'll just try and wet your appetite a bit. They are really pushing this whole concept of heroic combat and feeling like you are under pressure and overwhelmed. This could result in a horrible zerg of trash or it could result in some of the most intelligent and well designed raiding we have ever seen in an MMO. Only time will tell! Until then I would love to hear your thoughts on this game and what you think of playing without the Trinity we are all so used to.
So onto the music and this week as with the major content there are some things that are a bit different. As you know I'm a major Trance fan but also a big fan of lots of different electronic music. A DK we recruited quite some time ago called Thaya has a really great taste in music imo and he has been spamming me with a lot of nice tunes so I'm going to start off with a bit of that.
Marascia - The Mood. Dark, Techy, Minimal and really just so well put together.
Dub FX - Love Someone. Now this is something I seem to have totally missed but some of you may have seen. This guy seems pretty damn talented I have to say!
Medina - You and I. This track has been bouncing around for ages and honestly I wanted to feature it on my blog before but it never found its way on here.
Moonbeam - Cocoon (Original Mix). Yup it's another Thaya recommendation, kind of Minimal trance/house, I suck at these genre's sometimes.
Ferry Corsten Feat Novastar - Because The Remix (Original Extended Mix). No words for this, although it's a bit old just, fucking awesome Trance!
To finish off here is the Trailer that really raised my hype level for SW:TOR!
